10 reasons to have an eye exam
The eye examination is a vital health check and should be part of everyone’s normal health regime. Here are ten important reasons to have a regular examination:
- You've got one pair of eyes. Once lost, your eyesight can never be replaced.
- Unlike your teeth, your eyes do not usually hurt when there is something wrong.
- The eye examination can pick up early signs of potentially blinding eye conditions so that they can be treated before they cause further damage.
- The earlier a problem is detected the greater the chance of successful treatment. This is particularly true for young children and the elderly.
- The eye examination can also detect a number of other underlying health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or brain tumors.
- An examination checks whether your eyesight needs correcting with glasses. Good vision means working and playing better and safer - in fact, it means a better quality of life.

Understanding your prescription
Making sense of your prescription is easier than you would think if you understand the jargon! Here are some terms used on your prescription:
SPH (Sphere): This is your correction for long or short sight. It can be a ‘-‘value or a ‘+’ value and goes up in 0.25 steps. i.e., 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 etc.
CYL (Cylinder): The correction for any Astigmatism if you have one. It can be a ‘-‘ value or a ‘+’ value and goes up in 0.25 steps. 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 etc.
AXIS: The axis for which the correction for the Astigmatism needs to be set at. It will only be present if you have a value in CYL. And can be a value from 0 – 180 degrees.
ADD (Addition): Only required if you need to use glasses for reading and is always a ‘+’ value.
NEAR Means the same as ‘ADD’ above. (Present in prescriptions for bifocal and progressive spectacles)
‘-‘ or ‘+’: This is VERY important as it indicates short or long sightedness. The ‘-‘ or ‘+’ value is sometimes written above the (lens) value.
DS (Dioptre Sphere): Usually appears under the CYL box and would indicate no CYL value.
OD (Oculus Dexter): When used refers to the right eye
OS (Oculus Sinister): When used refers to the left eye
OU (Oculi Uterque) When used refers to both eyes
PD (Pupillary distance): This is the distance between the centre of one pupil to the center of the other pupil measured in millimeters. Usually written as one value (e.g., 67mm) but sometimes written as 34/33 if one eye is slightly further away from the center of the nose than the other.
If you require reading glasses kindly ensure that the NEAR or ADD is included in your prescription. If you require only Distance/driving glasses then you may omit this. You may also have an Intermediate value. This is for computer use. Progressive lenses serve all three purposes (i.e., Distance, Intermediate and Near Vision) Kindly contact us if you need further clarification about your prescription.
